- In een recente studie werd aangetoond dat een extract van wilgenbast, dat salicine bevat, een significant beter resultaat behaalde in de behandeling van pijn bij patiënten met osteoartritis (een vorm van artrose waarbij het kraakbeen in het gewricht aan het afslijten is of afgesleten is) dan een placebo.
- Dit middel is mogelijk te prefereren boven de klassieke (type aspirine) ontstekingsremmers bij sommige patiënten met artroseachtige klachten, omdat het kruid minder bijwerkingen geeft. In tegenstelling tot het synthetisch vervaardigde aspirine heeft het extract van wilgenbast het voordeel dat het het darmslijmvlies niet beschadigt bij mensen die daar gevoelig voor zijn.
- Niet geschikt voor zogende vrouwen: de salicylderivaten kunnen via de moedermelk aan de zuigeling worden doorgegeven en huiduitslag veroorzaken.
